Congresswoman Laura Richardson released the following statement today on President Obama's nomination of Dr. Jim Yong Kim as the next President of the World Bank.

"I applaud President Obama's inspired careful choice of Dr. Jim Yong Kim to be the next President of the World Bank. Dr. Kim is a passionate and dedicated leader who for decades has championed the cause of global health to improve the lives of people in developing countries. Dr. Kim's excellent resume and personal experience is an ideal match to the World Bank's mission to reduce poverty and support development. Dr. Kim has published extensively as an author and co-author for leading academic and scientific journals and as a contributor to numerous books on public health.

"Dr. Kim, who was born in Seoul, Korea and moved to the United States at the age of five, is the embodiment of the American Dream. Through hard work and determination, President Kim took advantage of the opportunities afforded by this country to graduate magna cum laude from Brown University, earn a medical degree from Harvard Medical School and a Ph.D. in anthropology from Harvard University, and go on to assume the presidency of Dartmouth University, one of the greatest educational institutions in America.

"As the next leader of the World Bank, one of the world's most powerful and influential tools in reducing poverty and raising standards of living world-wide, I am confident that Dr. Kim will lead that institution to even greater success promoting development and improving living standards in developing countries."

"As the representative of the 37th Congressional District of California, one of the most racially diverse districts in the nation and home to thousands of Asian Americans, I am especially proud that President Obama has made history by selecting the first Asian American to lead one of the most important international organizations in the world."
